Bettas by Jennifer Lapello
Clamped Fins
Note how all three unpaired fins are being held tightly closed on this Betta. Photographer unknown.
Symptoms: Fins are held close to body and closed tightly. Often accompanied by listlessness.
Cause: Varied.
Clamped fins can be the first warning sign of something much more serious, or they can be due to a much less serious problem, such
as overeating during a feeding.
Treatment: First and foremost, if the fish is kept with other fish, isolate it immediately.
Do a 100% water change and observe it closely for any detectable signs of any illness (i.e., external parasites, fungus). Even
if your fish perks up after a water change and appears to be fine otherwise, continue to keep it in isolation for a few days at the
very least, and watch it carefully for any signs of underlying illness daily.
Prevention: Clean water, general disease
prevention, avoid overfeeding.
