Bettas by Jennifer Lapello
Columnaris
Also known commonly as Body Fungus or Cotton Wool Disease.
This Betta is in a more advanced stage of Columnaris, evident by the large tufts of cottony growth. Photographer unknown.
Symptoms: White or gray tufts or patches, or stringy "fungus" trailing from fins. Often very cotton-like in appearance.
Cause:
Gram-negative bacteria (Flexibacter columnaris). Usually brought on by poor water conditions, but can be spread easily through
contaminated nets or aquariums/tanks. Highly contagious.
Treatment: Although this is usually thought of as a fungal
infection, it is bacterial in nature. There are several medications that can be used with success, as long as they treat gram-negative
bacteria. Jungle Labs Fungus Eliminator tablets (which are actually made to treat bacterial infections too, despite the name)
are highly effective in the beginning stages of this disease. In advanced stages, a more concentrated medication such as
Kanaplex or Furan-2 can be used. If this disease is caught early enough, it is highly treatable.
Prevention: Clean
water, regular water changes, disinfecting all objects that have come in contact with infected fish. PLEASE NOTE: This disease
is very common in pet store Bettas due to the small containers and filthy water conditions they are commonly kept in. Use caution
when purchasing from a pet store.
