Fish Lice
A close-up of a fish louse attached to a fish. Photographer unknown.
Symptoms: Flat, disk-shaped parasites, up to 1/4” long on fish’s body. Fish may try to scrape against objects in an attempt
to remove the lice.
Cause: External parasite (Argulus).
Treatment: Lice can be carefully individually plucked
off with a pair of tweezers. There are also commercial medications available.
Prevention: Always inspect new stock
thoroughly. Avoid sharing nets, etc., that have been in contact with affected fish.
