Hexamita
Microscopic view of Hexamita parasites. Photographer unknown.
Symptoms: Fish may appear pale, thin, and listless. There may be a loss of appetite and stringy feces. The belly
can appear to be sunken in. The first sign of this disease can be death.
Cause: Internal parasites (Hexamita)
Treatment:
Use a commercially-prepared medication for internal parasites, such as Metronidazole, Hex-a-Mit, or Clout for the recommended dosage
on the package of the medication you choose to use. Monitor fish for some time after treatment is complete to ensure that the
parasite is wiped out and that no further complications have developed.
Prevention: When feeding live foods, be sure to
wash them well beforehand. Avoid feeding blackworms unless you have a reputable source and really know what you're doing.
Avoid sharing nets, etc., that have been in contact with affected fish. Thoroughly disinfect all objects that have been in contact
with affected fish.
